Ethics Course for Physical Therapists

Let’s Get Ethical: Ethical Boundaries for PTs/OTs is a 2.5 hour interactive and engaging ethics approved continuing education course for physical and occupational therapists. The course is approved in NJ by the NJ Board of Physical Therapy #2110 – 14 and fulfills the 2.5 ethics for physical therapists in NJ continuing education requirement. It also approved in NY as Communicatient is an approved provider of continuing education for physical therapists in NY. Additionally, the course is also approved by the Ohio Physical Therapy Association #24S1983. Approval by a state chapter of the APTA (OH) also makes this course eligible for credit in PA and fulfills the PA ethics continuing education requirement.

Course Objectives

NJ PT/PTA Ethics Requirement

(1) Do I need to complete four credits of jurisprudence and professional ethics during each biennial renewal period?

Yes. N.J.A.C. 13:39A-9.2(a) requires that every licensed physical therapist and physical therapist assistant complete 30 credits of continuing education which must include four credits of jurisprudence and professional ethics for each biennial renewal period.

(2) Can the four (4) jurisprudence and professional ethics credits be taken through distance-learning courses such as home study or Internet courses?

Licensees must complete a 1.5-credit Jurisprudence Assessment Module offered by one of the sponsors listed on the New Jersey State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners’ website for the jurisprudence portion of the requirement. Licensees can complete any ethics course (distance learning or live) of 2.5 credits or more to meet the four-credit jurisprudence and professional ethics requirement.

PA PT/PTA Ethics Requirement

(1)  During each biennial renewal period, a licensee shall complete qualifying continuing education equal to at least 30 contact hours of continuing physical therapy education, including at least 2 contact hours in law or ethics applicable to the practice of physical therapy, and at least 2 contact hours in child abuse recognition and reporting in accordance with §  40.208(b) (relating to child abuse recognition and reporting—mandatory training requirement).

 (2) Provided that the course or program otherwise meets the requirements in subsection (c)(2) and the provider issues to each attending licensee a certificate of completion record in accordance with subsection (b)(1), a course or program of continuing education from a provider preapproved under this paragraph is approved by the Board.

     (i)   The following providers are preapproved:

       (A)   APTA or its components.
